In my first placement my AT used a strategy called Spirit Read in my class. Basically it is used when the class is reading something together, like a letter for home, or a book in class. What happens is that the teacher starts reading, and stops reading whenever she wants to. The students can then pick up wherever she left off, or choose to be silent. The readings go around the room, with no pattern or organization. This technique gives students the right to pass if they feel uncomfortable, or only read one sentence if thats all they want to read. It is completely up to the students! I thought it was really neat how that worked, and how the students actually participated even though they didn't have to.
